This year, over 1 MILLION shelter pets will never get the chance to find their forever homes. All of our animals are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Two by Two encourages all pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered; it is one of the best gifts you can give them. Spay and neuter helps control over-population, reduces the risk of certain cancers and other diseases, and decreases the tendency for pets to fight with other animals thus reducing injury. Spayed and neutered pets stay closer to home and are therefore less likely to get lost.

When funding is available, Two by Two sponsors free spay and neuter days. Watch the calendar as well as our Facebook page for announcements of these events.

Meet Dingo and Lucy

Dingo epitomizes Two by Two Rescue. A feral dog, she ran the streets of Old Town Helena for six years. She was so wild that even after being tranquilized she out ran those trying to save her. She was too smart for traps. It was Sonya’s dream to have her spayed and returned to her territory that she loved.

Dingo made Metro Goals, a manufacturer, her home base. She was treated to left-over lunches and allowed to come and go from their warehouse for shelter during inclement weather. Sonya fed Dingo too, making sure she had ham and turkey for the holidays. Spaghetti was one of her favorite foods.

It is impossible to know how many puppies Dingo had already had when Sonya “met” her as an adult dog and cared for her through the birth of 72 puppies that Two by Two saved. Dingo was a master at hiding and protecting her babies. On two occasions, volunteers had to dig three-foot trenches to get the puppies out of the “fox holes” Dingo had dug. She was a good mama. She was observed gulping food left for her then going to the hole where the puppies were. A special bark summoned them to her where she regurgitated so they could eat.

In 2008, Dingo knew she was sick. She brought her puppies to a place she knew Sonya could easily find them. Shortly after Dingo’s body was discovered behind a building at Metro Goals and they respectfully buried her on their property.

Lucy was pregnant during the same six years that Dingo was giving birth to multiple litters a year. Sonya chased Lucy in Old Town for seven years until a professional trapper helped her catch Lucy for spay, but not before 112 puppies were born. Sonya personally fostered every puppy of hers and says that Lucy is forever in her heart. Lucy’s reproduction chart says it all. Lucy and Dingo are big reasons why Two by Two exists and testimony to why spay and neuter is so important
